Ukrainian Baby Blanket

Ukrainian Baby Blanket

From the moment we heard our Ukrainian friends were expecting a baby, I knew he needed something truly unique to celebrate his culture and heritage, especially with times being as they are. The first thing that came to mind was a sunflower blanket, accented with the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

I started simply enough with the pattern from BagoDayCrochet on Etsy for a crochet sunflower granny square.

I quickly realized that an entire blanket of 3-D sunflowers would be overwhelming, so I decided to add some abstract squares as well. I used the pattern for Resplendent Afghan squares by Julie Yeager from Interweave Crochet to create more abstract representations with the same core sunflower colors.

Once all of the squares were finished, I sewed each one together to form the body of the blanket, and added a baby blue outline for the joins between each square.

To finish the project off, I added a boarder around the entire blanket in the colors of the Ukrainian flag.
